Last weekend Johnny’s paintings were displayed for the third year at the Awesome Autism Awareness Art Project Show in Iowa. I cannot begin to tell you how proud he is that his artwork is at a show for anyone to look at and admire. To see his face light up with the biggest smile its amazing. My good friend Lisa is one of the volunteers who puts together this show and if one of the reasons she does it is to bring a smile to a child’s face she has succeeded. One of the other reasons is to hilight for what someone CAN do when so many times in their life because of being Autistic they are reminded by professionals of what they CAN’T do. My friend believes that art is a great levelling field where anyone can create and share and when a person stands back and admires art they are just enjoying it for what it is. They are looking at the art and wondering what the artist was thinking when they created the piece. They are not thinking about who did it and what their disability is unless someone told them.
I like the idea of of spreading Autism Awareness this way but at the same time the bigger issue of “acceptance.” The biggest dividend is seeing my son’s confidence boosted as he has pride in something he has created.
A wise friend once told me that the most important thing you can do is build a child’s confidence so that they can become a risk taker. A risk taker is someone who is okay with making mistakes and learning from them and moving forward. This is how I would describe where Johnny is right now. Thank you Lisa 🙂
In a previous blog post I wrote about how my son’s art came to be part of the inaugural year of the A4 Project and how my friend Lisa discovered Johnny’s art and began a friendship with me.
